Diamonds and Clover Leaves

DIAMONDS & CLOVERLEAVES
Manu Luksch (35mm transparencies, 1996; projection or prints, dimensions variable)

During a visit to Beijing in 1996, Manu Luksch captured images of newly built, empty road intersections. Between 1966 and 1996, over 160 intersections were built in Beijing, some over 500m long and covering areas of 250,000 m2. This grandiose construction project necessitated the demolition of many hutongs and the mass resettlement of their inhabitants. Over the past decade, the highways and intersections have become clogged with the private cars that are major contributors to Beijing’s pollution problem.
